Hello Peeps!

Yes, it's been awhile...no, I haven't forgotten my Blog, but yes, I am "guilty" of being pulled in too many directions and having really no time to write on here...

I apologize for that...for the most part, though, I do believe most folks who actually READ this blog, are also checking out what I'm "doing" via Facebook, Twitter and/or my website...soooo, I do have that saving grace ;o)

So, what's been going on in the life of Ginny since last I wrote here? MUCH!

I've given up my "sparkly" to Allison Zmuda, the new Mrs. Maryland US 2010...she's a sweet gal and I wish her much luck in Las Vegas next month! All of Siouxzan Moore's new queens are FABULOUS and very sweet ladies...I know they will become friends and have the best time as sister-queens at Mrs. United States 2010!! I've had the honor - and pleasure - of being a part of the Mrs. Maryland/Pennsylvania US 2010 Pageant (as the outgoing queen), the Mrs. Delaware US 2010 Pageant (as the emcee) and the Mrs. Virginia US 2010 Pageant (as one of the judges) and I must say, there is no more fastidious director in the pageant world, than Siouxzan Moore. Not only committed to bringing excellence to her pageant, but total fairness and above-board dealings with everyone involved...as a "competitor", then a titleholder, then a member of the "crew" for Moore Pageant Productions, I can attest to the fact that there is no better place for married women to showcase their accomplishments - and themselves - then in one of Siouxzan's pageants! I love it so much, who knows, maybe you'll see me competing for another of her titles next year!!! ;o)

Since the beginning of 2010, I've been EXTREMELY busy with 4 major components that have pretty much taken my time and attention: my directorship of MidAtlantic Perfect Pageants, my work with my non-profit, Friends of Food Link, my directorship of the Maryland Chapter of RagingElephants.org and my chairmanship of the Anne Arundel County sector of Charles Lollar for Congress. All very important areas in the "life of Ginny" this year...

In addition, I have daily life that needs attention (you know the drill - hubby, kids, grandbabies, friends, family, business, volunteering, advocating...and just generally being "Ginny"....telling it like it is and not apologizing for speaking the truth ;)

I continue to be in awe of the magnificence of God....I'm not being "preachy" here or trying to "push religion"...again, just keeping things real and sharing with all of you what I KNOW to be fact: there is a "power" far greater than ANY we can imagine who, when we recognize Him, shows us His greatness via our own life's experiences. Being on this earth...having life...is a gift. While we are "here", treat everyday as the gift that it is...listen to that "voice" in your heart that says, "everything will be okay" (especially when things are the toughest for you), for it's that "voice" (the voice of God that lives in each of us) that enables us to see the brilliance of our lives...our "worth" as part of God's plan.

I have met, and in some cases, become friends, with the most amazing people...I am in awe of the journey that has led me to these people.

I continue to reach out to others...it's what I "do"...who I just might be able to bring a smile to their hearts. I continue to stand up for RIGHT...I speak out against tyranny and wrong...I will ALWAYS fight for my God, my family and my country...because above all else...this is simply my calling - it's why I'm "here"...

Being Mrs. Maryland United States in 2009 has opened more avenues for me to pursue my calling...and, to my family (especially my husband, Chris and my children), to my friends, to those who have a word of encouragement and support, and to God, I give my deepest appreciation to.

Now....as for what I'm gonna do next (as a competitor)??? Who knows....we'll just have to wait and see where I'm "led" (if I'm led anywhere at all). Until then, I'll always still be "Ginny"....

Thoughts of 2009 as We Head Toward 2010....

With Christmas three days past and with it, the "Season of Joy" coming quickly to an end, I'm praying for so many things for 2010...for my family and for my country.

This year, 2009 has been riddled with ups and downs (I'm sad to say, mostly "downs" for the majority of Americans), yet I'm optimistic that those "ups" will have been enough to sustain us, to keep us strong in order to keep level-headed and steadfast in doing what is "right"....in all things.

On the political front...some of the low-lights - the "downs" - include Congress passing (without reading OR actually finishing writing it), a $787 billion stimulus package. (Sounds like it would have been an "up", right? Could have been, IF the money were turned over to American taxpayers so they could use it to stimulate the economy...but that didn't happen). The money is to be doled out over the next decade or so by members of Congress on projects that THEY deem vital - such as constructing buildings that will be named after members of Congress....go figure.

Bailouts to banks and automakers (who, can you believe it, give exorbitant bonuses to their "leaders" after receiving OUR taxpayer cash??), Cash for Clunkers (that one failed miserably), a sky-high unemployment rate (as a side note, the stimulus package did essentially ZERO to help - what jobs came from that??), withdrawal of Presidential nominees to office due to their failure to pay taxes (and more disturbing, the confirmation of others who also failed to pay taxes, but the President seemed to look the other way...bet that wouldn't be the case for you or for me)...just a few in the HUGE list of political "downs" for 2009.

As for the political "ups"....hundreds of thousands of American citizens have stood up, woken up, and are no longer apathetic to policy-making in our country...give me a few days, I may be able to come up with one or two more "ups".

Some personal "downs"....Michael Jackson and Patrick Swayze die. I "grew up" with both of these guys and appreciated their talents. Always a downer when our world "loses" people who touch the hearts of so many...in the "bit more personal" category, my hubby lost sleep, hair and probably has given himself an ulcer trying to maintain his business - keep it healthy enough to not only pay the bills, but keep employees on the payroll!! The business has been "in business" since 1923...NEVER, in its 86 years has it "suffered" so....gee, "thanks a lot" Maryland State Government, and also, a resounding "thanks a million" to the Federal Government for all you've done to help bring down and potentially destroy small businesses like my husbands. We really appreciate it...

Some personal "ups"...I won Mrs. Maryland US in April (duh, Ginny...this is after all, the blog for "Ginny Meerman, Mrs. Maryland United States 2009)...;-) This was not only the BEST "up" of 2009 for me, but one of the most memorable and special "ups" of my life...I'm so very lucky to have this personal dream realized...thank you God!

I could literally sit here for hours blogging about the ups and downs, highs and lows of 2009....couldn't we all? What I'd like to do instead is share my prayer for 2010, after all, the past is gone, tomorrow (though promised to no one) is what we have to look forward to...

I pray that we all recognize the GIFT of living in the most amazing country on Earth and that we all, in our own way, have the passion and love to stand up for our country, to protect our rights and our freedoms. To uphold the foundation that our country was founded upon and realize that all of this - being "American" - is a GIFT from God, not to be trod upon with ungrateful boots. I pray that we do what is right for our children - for our future - as well as for one another.

My Christmas Jar

The Christmas Jars is an idea that author, Jason Wright, came up with (and wrote a book about) for which we can not only be the catalyst for causing a miracle in someone's life, but be given the priceless gift of love and hope - from ourselves!

Chris and I have been filling a jar with loose change. It isn't difficult to do. Every time I turn around, there is a quarter, nickel or some other coin jingling in my wallet, my coat pocket or even gathering in the bottom of my purse (I hate to admit it, but yes, even I can be lazy and simply throw change into my purse without bothering to put it where it "belongs" in my wallet). Chris comes home from work every single day and empties his pant's pockets of the loose change he's accumulated during the day...

This "loose change" is daily creating hope for someone else as it gathers in our Christmas Jar...the recipient just doesn't know it - YET!

On Christmas Eve, I'll place that jar in a box, along with a copy of the book and an anonymous letter from us, wrap it up and add ribbons and bows. Chris and I will drive to an area in our town that we know is home to families that are struggling to make ends meet....we'll leave that box on the doorstep of whichever home "speaks to our heart". I know that we'll be guided exactly to the people (or person) that needs a little "miracle" the most....God will guide us. We'll park our car away from the home we select, get out and walk to the home. I'll be hiding (I can just see it now...me, crouching behind some shrub or tree...too funny!!) while Chris clandestinely makes his way to the front door, where he'll place the box, knock loudly on the door and take off running for "cover"....we'll watch as the door is opened and the recipient of our gift discovers the box sitting there. When the box is safely in it's owners hands and the door closes, Chris and I will sneak back to our car and return home...with a smile on our face and hope in our hearts. WOW, what a gift that is going to be for us!

I encourage you too, to create a Christmas miracle for someone who needs hope...you can start now to fill a jar...even if you end up with $20 in that jar, that very well could be HUGE for whoever you gift it to! You can leave your gift by a locker (if you're in school or maybe working in a building that has lockers), leave it on a seat on the Metro, hand it to a homeless person....the possibilities are limitless!!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

I was scolded the other day by a sweet gal who is near and dear to my heart...she said to me, "Your blog is lacking some love" ;-)

She's right...thank you AAH for that gentle reminder to get over here and chat it up on my Mrs. Maryland Blog...so here goes!

Since October was my last post, I've got a couple of months (almost) to make up for...to fill you folks in on. It has been a TREMENDOUS journey as Mrs. Maryland thus far....and things just aren't slowing down in the least bit! I've had the opportunity to attend a ground-breaking for the new Annapolis Light House Shelter...WHOO-HOO! I've traveled to high schools across the state speaking to students about the importance of reaching out to help the working poor and needy citizens of our state. I've also had so much fun modeling for various events (Sip and Strut for Autism and the Mid Atlantic Cancer Support Center were two of the most special). I've been so blessed to be able to be out and about in my beloved Free State, meeting remarkable people who have touched my life forevermore!

The Christmas Season is upon us...can you believe how QUICKLY it's come?!?! My grandmother used to tell me that when I got older that time would just fly by....well, she was right!!

While I love Christmas so very much, this time of year also holds a few memories of heartbreak too....I'm sure there are many who have those same feelings. And to those of us that this rings true....we must remember that heart ache is God's gift of reminding us of love and hope....I wish this for all of us ;-)

The next few weeks until New Year's are going to be hectic...but, I'm thankful that I have the opportunity to be right there in the midst of all that busy-ness! Christmas parties, speaking engagements, cards signed, addressed and mailed to my peeps, decorating (already done!!), shopping for those special expressions of love, preparing meals, cleaning house, volunteering, attending meetings, giving hugs, singing, laughing, watching Christmas movies, playing with my grandbabies....LIVING and enjoying each and every moment. This too, I wish for all of you!

Ahhh, October!!

October...the official "Fall-Back" month, where we set our clock's back one hour, essentially robbing ourselves of that precious 60 additional minutes of daylight and for most people being forced to wake and go to work - IN THE DARK - and return home afterwards - IN THE DARK. Depressing.

But, like I always say, there is a silver lining to every black cloud...

Let's see here, where is that silver lining...what is it? Hmmmmm....

Could be that given the additional "dark hour", we are able to enjoy the peaceful glow given by the beautiful candles (lead-free wicks, of course) we light (instead of turning on the switch and ultimately padding the pockets of the utility company)...I love candle light.

Could be the extra hour of oooohing and aaaahing over our neighbor's Christmas decorations all lit up every night....(I know, this defeats purpose of the candle-lighting-less-moolah-to-the-utilities concept mentioned above, but hey, what can I say, I LOVE looking at all the beautiful lighting displays at Christmastime!)...

Could be the extra hour of snuggling beneath the covers on a Saturday and/or Sunday because, hey, the sun isn't "up" yet, so why should we be?!?!

Whatever it is, with the "bad", the "good" comes too...we just have to be sure to remember to look for it ;-)

I enjoy keeping busy, and especially love be busy with a purpose...(there's nothing worse for me than to feel like I've run all day long but have accomplished nothing for someone else!!)

First Day of School for My "Baby"

Yes, it's "back-to-school" once again! The summer literally whizzed by....my head is still spinning from the speed at which we are headed into Autumn! And so it is, once again for me, that I have the "First Day Blues"...

I absolutely LOVE having my kids home with me...being together...so, of course, summer break from school is always very special. It's not just the days away at the beach (or wherever we go) on vacation that makes this time special, it's actually those simple everyday moments. Sleeping in after staying awake until all hours of the night (morning actually!) watching the boob tube or chatting or me watching the kids play some extremely difficult video games (whatever happened to Frogger, Pac Man and Galaga?!?!?!?!) or all of us just giggling and being silly...it's being a family.

What makes this particular "First Day" a bit more poignantly sad is that my youngest son is the last of my "babies" living at home...and he's a senior in high school this year, so even his eventually "flying from the nest" is fast approaching. I know that we, as mothers, should be excited for our children to grow up and begin their own journey through life...we should be happy that we have raised these amazing people and that they are starting down their own paths with the foundation we've given them keeping them grounded....we should be thrilled that we have these children-turned-adults as a testament to our loving and nurturing care of them. But I'm telling you what....the missing them - the quietness of the house, the need to grocery shop lessened considerably, the no checking in on them at night before you go to bed...the MOTHERING of them - is heartbreaking.

Compound those sentiments with the realization that you are not needed any longer, further breaks your heart and has you wondering, "what do I do now?" Oh, of course, our children will "need" us for some things...even when they are 40, they will come to us (hopefully!!) for advice or what have you...the "need" I'm talking about is the 18+ years of wiping tears when they were hurt or sad, the hugging and cuddling, the crawling into your bed when they had a bad dream, the cutting of the meat into little pieces so they don't choke, the watching of the teeth brushing and flossing to make certain its done right, the helping with homework, the teaching to ride a 2-wheeler....you get it....the NEEDING you....the mothering as you have known it for 18+ years is over...and it IS sad.

I have been "mommying" for almost 27 years....a HUGE portion of my life devoted to the greatest loves of my life....3 of those 4 are young adults....living their journey through life....and I am proud of them....and I miss their "little selves" very much :-)

My youngest is on their heels....I have a year or so to still be a mothering mommy....and I am going to cherish ever moment.

I hope I haven't depressed you...not my intention at all....just sharing and hoping that you will cherish being the mommy you are too ;-)

It's Been Awhile!

It seems like FOREVER since I've posted on my blog....boy, does time fly when you're having fun (and are busy, busy, busy)!!!

My sons and I returned home from Bethany Beach on the afternoon of August 12th, whereupon I immediately packed my suitcase and headed to BWI airport with Chris and Chrisje to catch our flight to Orlando!! We were absolutely going to be sure to be at America's Perfect helping and cheering for our DC/DE/MD Jr Teen, Teen and Miss queens!! The four days in Orlando were certainly busy...but such a blast. I am so proud of each of the gals who were there representing my MidAtlantic Perfect Pageants as they were not only gorgeous, but amazing to watch as they worked that runway...they are exceptional young women!!

This was the most difficult competition I have EVER seen....and most people in attendance will agree with me...it was a FIERCE competition. So many lovely girls (over 120) gathered in one venue to compete for 3 national titles...I was WOWED!!! What was even more incredible than being a part of this spectacular event, was watching MY girls!! They all did such an amazing job and Chris and I are so very proud of them...

It is an honor to know not only the girls, but their family and friends as well. Such unconditional love and support....these people will always have a place in my heart and will be considered "family" forever ;-)

I Just Have to Speak Up...

I received a comment today on my personal website, directly addressing my August 2nd posting on this blog about my father's death as a result of a motorcycle accident...the comment left was rather nasty and quite honestly had me scratching my head as to just what this person's "issue" with me is....of course, my sweetheart of a hubby, said "delete the comment and forget about it"...

I did delete the comment from my website....but I am not one to just "forget" something that, in the very least, deserves some "schooling"!! (Now, whether the person I am "educating" gets it or not, that's not an issue for me....as long as I have stood up and said what needs to be said, I'm all good and THEN I can forget about it).

Below is the comment...(I've copied and pasted it here so that you can not only see the unwarranted nastiness - especially toward my helping the homeless - but also the apparent inarticulateness of the author):

"Your father died in bike crash & you're wasting time time on the homeless? Shame on you! Your platform should be motorcycle awareness, but, wait, I guess you're not a licensed rider....So, what, precisely wad your point in listing this info in your blog?"

First of all, how can anyone say "shame on you" for helping those in need...the homeless? Not to mention that I am "wasting time on the homeless"....THAT I don't understand - at all!! One could have said, "your father died in a bike crash; maybe you could add motorcycle awareness to your platform?" I'd imagine that someone who had a caring heart could have worded their suggestion for my platform in this manner...But to say that I'm wasting time and shame on me?? Sickening...truly makes me sick to my stomach that one could be so blatantly uncaring.

Second, IF this person would have taken a smidgen of time to actually READ my post, it would have been understood what my "point in listing this - (my father's death) - info in your blog" was all about. The August 2nd post was to share my thoughts about journeying beyond my life's struggles to an understanding of the magnitude of hope in our lives.

Third...NO ONE can tell me what my "platform" SHOULD BE, except ME!!! Has this person lived my life? I don't think so.

Would I choose motorcycle awareness as a platform? NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT! (At least not in the context that this person probably would think of as "motorcycle awareness"....if I had chosen this as my "platform", I would tell anyone who would listen to me that the ONLY safe motorcycle is one whose engine is not running and is sitting still....the ONLY motorcycle awareness that I would promote is to NOT RIDE THEM. PERIOD). Some motorcycles are BEAUTIFUL to look at, but I wouldn't ride them! I don't think the author of the nasty comment would approve of this type of motorcycle awareness platform, so it's probably a good thing that I do advocate for the hungry, homeless and working poor!

My father died in a motorcycle accident. It was HIS own doing...his choice to speed when he shouldn't have, his choice to pass illegally. He was traveling at a high rate of speed....he crossed over the double yellow lines into the wrong lane to pass the car in front of him...that car turned left without having a clue that my father was speeding up to go around him....my father slammed into that car going over 100 miles per hour....I learned all of this from the accident report and from his wife, because I didn't really know my father. (Again, this person does not take the time to learn about who I am or what I have lived through or they would know that I never knew my father growing up, that my brother and I suffered unspeakable abuse as children because we were kept from our father...and in fact, we met our father for the first time just 6 short months before he died...but why would I tell this story on my blog...why would I wish my father, who I barely knew, a happy birthday on this blog???? TO SHARE THE HEARTACHE THAT I'VE ENDURED and to SHARE THAT HOPE WILL GET YOU THROUGH!!)

My brother died in a motorcycle accident. It was HIS own doing. No one to blame...HE CHOSE to race that bike on that track in Boonsboro, MD. He died drag racing his motorcycle...he hit the pavement of that race track going 160 miles per hour....HIS choice to put himself in harm's way.

Tell me, what kind of "motorcycle awareness" would I speak on having these two tragedies as models?

Would I ever get a motorcycle license myself? NO...

However, if others choose to ride "bikes", more power to them. If motorcycle riding is enjoyable to them, that's great. I'm happy for them and I would certainly never tell them "shame on you" for advocating riding motorcycles (and in the same token, I am not going to stand up and promote motorcycle awareness when I DO NOT BELIEVE that we all should be riding them!!)....my brother LOVED his "bikes"; he LOVED speeding on them...he LOVED the thrill of just him and his "bike" bulleting down the track - I respected that because it was what HE loved, but I never liked it....he died doing what he loved and no matter how much "awareness" anyone would have made about motorcycles, he still would have sped down that track and died on November 13th, 2005...I would much rather him still be here - NOT RIDING - then gone....it was not my choice...it was HIS and God's.

As for my "platform" being geared toward the assistance of the homeless....IF THIS PERSON WOULD HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO READ NOT ONLY MY BLOG, BUT MY WEBSITE, THEY WOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT I, MYSELF, WAS HOMELESS (ALONG WITH MY TWO BABIES)....helping the homeless is important to me because I have lived that which this person says is a "waste of time". Helping others is not simply a "platform" for me....IT IS MY LIFE!! I did not create a "platform" to participate in pageants with....I HAVE PARTICIPATED IN PAGEANTS BECAUSE I HAVE LIVED MY PLATFORM!!! I did not choose to be homeless...as thousands of people (children included) did not choose to be without a home tonight....we all need to offer hope, no matter how infinitesimally, to those who are going through adversity - ESPECIALLY when it is not by their own choosing!!

My August 2nd post on this blog was to illustrate how I have journeyed through some extremely difficult - and heart-wrenchingly sorrowful - moments in life...and how I believe that BECAUSE of faith and hope, I got through and I continue to get through....I may "suffer", but when I lean on God, I learn that there IS good to come from every "bad" that I endure.

Some will say that I have spent too much time on addressing this nasty comment...I will ALWAYS stand up and speak what's right...I will ALWAYS "address" that which I feel needs to be addressed....and so it is here...now that I have spoken my piece, I will be taking my hubby's advice and "let it go"....

What a GREAT Idea!

It's a rainy day here at the beach...So, I'm flipping through a People magazine (skimming over the nonsensical stuff about what celebrity wore the same article of clothing TWICE - imagine THAT!!!....oh, the horror of it all!!!) when I come across a story of a book club for the homeless...

A man, a high-powered lawyer (Peter Resnik is his name) in Boston walked to his office through a park. In 2007, Mr. Resnik decided to stop and chat with one of the homeless men who called this park "home"...a casual conversation ensued - comments about life...and then about books they had read ("Water for Elephants" - which by the way I have read and enjoyed EXCEPT for the parts describing that poor elephant being beaten!!!, "The Kite Runner" - I started this one, but couldn't finish it...wasn't my "cup of tea"). So Mr. Resnik loaned the homeless gentleman a book or two and then the homeless gentleman loaned the books to other homeless men...and an idea was hatched!

With the help of an outreach worker, Peter Resnik set up a book club. Now, every Tuesday night, about eight men and women meet at a church for literary talk. Talking about books...how can this be beneficial to those without a home?!?! Believe me, reading books can SAVE YOUR LIFE....books saved mine!!

You see, it is during our darkest hours that we have to be the strongest...we have to remember to have faith - to lean upon God to get us through. This is the most difficult thing for our frail human selves to remember, much less do!! Books have the "power" to take us away from ourselves - our reality, our angst - and transport us to places of hope! Hope gives us a sense of well-being...that feeling of well-being builds the strength to keep the faith...thus, hope is replacing hurt, fear, uncertainty, sorrow...and helping us to remember to lean upon God...

To be able to have a group of people who are struggling through a difficult time in their lives meet - even if it is just once a week - to share their thoughts and feelings about a book, is a powerful tool to share hope!! These people will gain confidence, build friendships - and have a welcome break from the harsh realities that they face...and maybe, just maybe, be given the gift of strength to carry on and overcome!

I'm going to take this idea to the Annapolis Light House Shelter....I want to start a book club for the homeless people in my community!! Maybe you will be inspired to do the same?

Breakfast with a She-ro

Yesterday I had breakfast with Christina (Tina) Vickers...what a gal...what a woman!!

Though we had never had the opportunity to sit down and chat prior to yesterday, I had always admired Tina - from afar - for all that I could see on the surface...but wow, after chatting with her, I am blown away by her being a daily "she-ro"!!!

Tina is a career firefighter and EMT...she's an officer in the Ocean City Fire Department and even drives those big ole fire engines!!! She also has to deal with belligerent young people who are at the beach on vacation and have imbibed waaaay too much (Monday night, as an EMT, she went to one popular establishment 3 separate times on an emergency call, just to find yet another extremely intoxicated young person...all three of these people, it seemed, waited for Tina to arrive before they decided to vomit...right on her!!). She is even a trained water rescue swimmer and has had to strip down to undies and brassiere to hop into the Atlantic Ocean to save folks from drowning...not to mention the burning buildings she's gone into!! (She had her gear in her trunk and I got to see it....love the eagle on the helmet....almost as much as I loved the special picture she keeps inside her helmet...)

Tina is also a "pageant chick"....and people say that us pageant girls are all "fluff"???? Obviously they haven't met Tina ;-)

On top of being a She-ro as a firefighter/EMT, Tina is always the biggest She-ro to her family....her hubby and two sons obviously adore and admire her....;-)

Happy Birthday...

Today would have been my father's 66th birthday....so young. My father was killed in, of all things, a motorcycle accident, 26 years ago at the age of 40. Truly too young....

I never knew my father as a child, in fact, my brother and I didn't meet him until I was 18 and Bobby (my brother) was 20. My mother kept us from him..."hiding" us and making it virtually impossible for him to find us....but I knew, deep in my heart, that my daddy loved me and that one day, I would see him.

God was once again good and answered my prayers....my hope.

My father DID love Bobby and me...he spent years looking for us, only to be denied access to us by my mother, but he never stopped trying and he certainly never stopped thinking - and loving - us. He did go on with his life....he remarried a couple of times...had 2 more children - daughters....Nicole and Angela. (On a side note...it's funny how I named MY daughter Nicole prior to my knowing about HIS Nicole....)

Anyway....to make a long story short....we met, we instantly loved one another (had we ever stopped?), we were so happy to have "found" one another and were looking forward to our relationship - FINALLY - for the future!

Less than 6 months after this meeting....my father was driving his motorcycle along a Florida road and died. Gone too soon....

Was I upset? Yes. Did I think that God had forsaken me again? Yes....but as with all that I have gone through, this was no different....I eventually saw the goodness of God in all the "bad" of being human. God KNEW that my father would be "leaving" and He gifted me and my brother with being able to touch him, to "know him" before he had to go...and though I wish he could have stayed and still be here today...I am thankful for the gift of being able to hug him and "know" him before he died.

It is ironic that my brother died in a similar fashion to our father....my brother was also very young (he was 42 when he died)....and again, I was angry at God...upset and feeling forsaken...but again...I realized the "gift" of having my brother in my life....of now having a most beautiful Guardian Angel ;-)

Being at the beach does "this" to me....makes me appreciate and ponder life....

As I Sit Here in Paradise...I Know I Am Blessed...But WHY?

As I sit on the balcony this morning, watching the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean, listening to the sound of the waves breaking shore less than 200 yards from where I sit, enjoying the wonder of this most beautiful landscape that God has created for us, I thought of how far I've come from where I've been...suffering unspeakable abuse as a child, neglect, being a young mother of two little ones and homeless...enduring the heartache and soul-crushing devastation of my best friend, my confidant - my brother being suddenly taken from us in that horrific motorcycle accident.

I ponder quite often the "how" and the "why" I have gotten through...from Victim to Victor. What is my "purpose" and what am I supposed to "do"? I'm sure I am not the only one to think these things....I certainly am not the only person who has gone through adversity in life...yet, I feel at times, singular in my almost manic need - and want - to help other people...to be a source of hope where there is hurt.

And so I rise each day with a "Thank You Lord for all You have blessed me with...Thank You Lord for ALWAYS walking beside me through life...Thank You Lord for this new day and please show me how to be of service to others - in YOUR name". This is my purpose...

To be a testament to the power of faith...the power of HOPE...to be a testament to the goodness of God...and to be the "voice" for those who need someone to speak up for them until they are able to speak for themselves - and be heard!

And so, I speak...I "share" with everyone that which is important to me....and I thank God everyday for the ability to do so ;-)

Plans to End Homelessness...and How You Can Stay Informed...and Maybe Even Help!

Homelessness is a problem with a solution. Changes in Federal policies and resources will be necessary to implement that solution. The changes need to be outcome-focused, research-based, and TARGETED. Should they also be ambitious? Yes, however the changes should be realistic, framed by an understanding of the budget and programmatic environment.
In the summer of 2000, The National Alliance to End Homelessness introduced a “Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness”.
Much of the current homeless assistance system does a heroic job of providing shelter, housing, and services to address homelessness. This system is also improving by focusing on what homeless people want most – a RAPID return to permanent housing. Unfortunately, this system alone can do very little to PREVENT people from becoming homeless or change the overall availability of housing, income and services that will truly end homelessness.

The potential to prevent homelessness DOES exist in mainstream social programs, such as welfare, health care, mental health care, substance abuse treatment, and veterans’ assistance. HOWEVER, the current resources policies of these programs, DO NOT match the existing need, particularly for those people who are the most vulnerable. Ironically, it seems that over the past several decades, the very existence of the homeless assistance programs (as they have been and are currently in effect), can enable ad encourage these mainstream systems to shift the cost and responsibility for helping the most vulnerable people, which is detrimental to ending homelessness.

The Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness is a plan to turn this trend around and to “root out” homelessness in the United States. The plan outlines overarching goals that, if pursued consistently, would change the dynamic of homelessness…the institutionalization of homeless persons would be AVOIDED, and we would all be able to see the time when every person in our nation has a home!

At the Beach with My Babies

Friday evening (July 31st) we arrive to Sea Colony in Bethany Beach with a storm following us the entire way from home...a humdinger of a thunder and lightening show hot on our rears as we raced just ahead of the storm. We made it into our comdo...with only a few minutes to spare because the heaven's opened up and Mother Nature unleashed her greatness...chairs and chaises went flying from 10 stories up off of the balconies and onto the Promenade below! Thunder clapped loudly right above our building with the magnificence of bolts of lightening accompanying the "sound show"....after the storm had settled down a bit, the rains subsided and oh my, what a glorious sight we saw!!! The skies turned an ethereal shade of purplish-pink and seemed to glow...God is amazing! The boys then ran down to play some catch while "mommy" cooked dinner (hey....I will ALWAYS be "mommy" to my children....even when they are old and gray, I'm their "mommy")....

This morning (Sat, Aug 1st) brings clear blue skies, warm sunshine and an early morning workout for me before hitting the beach for the entire day! (Walter will be so proud of me...even though I'm eating some "bad things", I'm taking care of my body that he helped shape ;-) I may not be Mrs. United States to the 5 judges, but I AM "Mrs. Everything" to those who love me and I'm gonna take care of me....I am woman, hear me roar!! ;-)

My hubby grabbed his coffee and the camera (he's my "paparazzi" too!!) and trekked down to the beach with me...hauling my favorite chair so that I'd be sure to get the "best" spot on the beach...I love my man!!! ;-)

It's Been A Couple of Days, Hasn't It?!?!

Well, more than a "couple", but you know what I mean ;-)

Mrs. United States Pageant....I have been inundated with many questions and comments about my experience in Las Vegas competing for the Mrs. United States title...was it "fair"? How did I NOT make the Top 12? Did I have a good time? Were the ladies nice? Would I go back? And many..."we are proud of you", "we love you", etc., etc. (I'm not comfortable with accolades....I NEVER look at myself as "special"....

I had a good time in Las Vegas...a wonderful experience, one that I am thankful that I had the opportunity to now deposit in my "special memories" bank :o) My week was made even more special because of the newfound friendships I formed with a couple of ladies who have taken residence in my heart...I'm grateful to have met them. Of course, in an event of this nature, when you have 54 women from all walks of life, with varying life experiences, gathering together for essentially one purpose - to WIN, there will be an underlying current of competitiveness...that's all good and I enjoyed that aspect as well...it is what it is ;-)

How did I NOT make the Top 12? How did the other 41 women who did not make the Top 12, NOT make it? Who knows....we have to remember that a pageant is a "judged" competition...."judged" by a panel of individuals who mark down a score for each delegate in three categories (interview, swimsuit, evening gown)....it is their perception of each of us that leads to who makes the "top spots" and ultimately, which gal wins. A different day, different judges....different outcome. I didn't "make it" because I just didn't make it....I did my personal best...I would not change a thing....so I do win - for me and for all those who believe in me....I just didn't come home with that particular crown...but my "everyday crown" is still in place....all those who love me and who I love, see it ;-)

As far as competing at Mrs. United States again...I would love to go back...but I probably will not. I have to be honest with myself....while I LOVE being a part of the pageant competition...I LOVE the interview, I LOVE being on that stage (the Opening Number, Swimsuit, Evening Gown...LOVE IT!!), I LOVE the personal challenge to be my best....I am getting older, not younger and I have much left to do with my life that competing in pageants interferes with...leaves me not much time on my calendar... ;-)

Some folks think that I have competed in pageants "my whole life"....in actuality, this is my 3rd year of participation as a competitor in pageantry...I have had a ball....it's been a dream come true....ESPECIALLLY winning Mrs. Maryland United States this year!!! THAT WAS MY MOST SPECIAL MOMENT and I'm thankful to my Lord and Savior for allowing me that gift!!! BECAUSE I have allowed myself to step outside of my "comfort zone" and throw my hat in the pageantry ring, I have had doors open for me in the Maryland State Legislature, with non-profit organizations, at the White House!!! I have had the opportunity to appear on television, radio and have traveled throughout the United States speaking about the issues that I have advocated for over the past 20+ years....I am thankful to my pageant experiences for being the catalyst for my being in a position to better and more strategically advocate for my causes. I started competing in pageants FOR the reason of becoming more of a public figure...I have accomplished that....and will continue to move onward and make an even bigger mark on my small part of the world!

I have a passion for advocacy....for the homeless, the hungry, the working poor...for at risk/abused children because I have personal life experiences with each of these "issues"....I also have dedicated my daily life to reaching out to make the positive difference in the lives of others...I do believe that I will go back to concentrating on those areas of my life where I can be of the most service to others....it's been great concentrating on "me" through pageantry, but my heart is telling me that I'm the happiest when I'm focusing on others ;-)

I will always love pageantry and will stay involved in other ways....I'll continue to direct for the Perfect Pageants with my DC/DE/MD Perfect Teen & Miss Pageant, I'll emcee, judge, choreograph, and "tutor" young ladies who ask me for help (which, by the way, I DO NOT EVER CHARGE A FEE for....I do not believe that I am an "expert" and charging a fee for sharing tips and HELPING someone is something I would NEVER do)...if I can positively touch lives AND enjoy pageantry, then that's a special thing for me!!

Thank you to all those who sent me well wishes...for all the personal messages and for not being disappointed in me...which was my biggest worry in Las Vegas....not doing well and thus disappointing my family and friends...thank you for loving me...I am the winningest winner because of all of YOU ;-)

Headed Home....Maryland, My Maryland!!

It was a great week in Las Vegas....particularly because I got to once again share the experience with my hubby, kids and friends...and I had the opportunity to make new friends ;-)

When I did not place in the Top 12 on Finals night, my initial inward reaction was disappointment...not only for myself, but mostly because I was worried that I had let all of the people who believed in me down....I was very sad for not doing better FOR all my peeps. But then, that feeling of disappointment quickly changed to an "oh well, it is what it is and I KNOW I did my very best...would not change one thing...so, I have nothing to be upset about" feeling ;-)

I know that all the people who care about me....truly care...are still happy to know me, happy to love me and appreciate the fact that I did do my best...and for this...for each and every one of my peeps...I AM A WINNER...no judge's panel can take that away from me ;-)

I LOVE being Mrs. Maryland...I LOVE having Siouxzan Moore as my director....I LOVE working to bring awareness to the plight of the working poor, hungry and homeless in the State of Maryland and our country....I am honored and so very lucky to have this amazing opportunity, as Mrs. Maryland United States 2009, to reach out to more people...and am thankful to God for all.

I promise I will do my best to be the BEST Mrs. Maryland that I can be...

Sorry for not being a "regular" poster on here...but hey, I'm busy in Las Vegas at Mrs. United States, you know? (Of course you know, it's probably the reason you're reading this in the first place....because you are "following" Mrs. Maryland as she - I - "go" for the Mrs. United States title...lol)

It's been busy...but happily so...here at The Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas....having a fabulous time....remembering that all my "army of angels" walk with me each step I take here (and every step I take anywhere!) and am just praying that I do my best to assure that all those who truly love me (and that I love so very much), all those who believe in my "message of hope and determination", all those who have inspired me to never give up, and all those who have touched my life in even the smallest of ways....are proud of me....

I do this for you....NOT for my own "glory"....I want to win for YOU and to be an "instrument" of the testament of the power of God...the power of hope and faith to NEVER give in, but always fight using the holy spirit - OUR SOUL - to be better, do greater things!

I'm praying....

I sure hope I got the spelling of this adorable baby girl correct....I was perusing the shops in Caesar's Palace while chatting on my cell with my hubby (who is at home, but flying to Vegas tomorrow night...YEAH!!!), when what should I see, but the CUTEST little baby girl...and if you know me, you know I just had to squeeze on her for a second!! Her mommy was very gracious and allowed me the treat of holding precious Inaya from Arizona (like I said, I hope I've spelled her name right).

Today was a busy day...tomorrow will prove to be even busier!

We had Orientation after breakfast, then rehearsals began - and last all day (except for our break for lunch and a few "5-minute" breaks)....the production number is going to be fantabulous! I wish everyone could be in Vegas on Wednesday night to watch..;-) After rehearsals, we were excused for dinner and preparation for our bus tour over to Caesar's Palace....shopping and autograph signing...F U N!!!

There was a thunderstorm in Vegas on the way back to The Orleans...beautiful ;-)

Tomorrow is the swimsuit photoshoot, then rehearsals ALL day...then Interviews tomorrow night! A BIG DAY indeed!

The "Eagle" Has Landed!!

Kate Cohen (Mrs. PA) and I made it to Las Vegas this afternoon...the "silver bird" (courtesy of US Air) left Philadelphia at 11:20 am this morning and arrived in Vegas 30 minutes early...whoo-hoo! (Kate's hubby arranged for a driver to meet us at the airport, who was kind enough to snap a photo of me and Kate arriving at the hotel)....

I (who is the "what-if" packing champion of the world), of course, schlepped not one, but 3 suitcases and my purse (AND I shipped a 50 pound box to the hotel too!!)...each of those suitcases weighing in at 50 pounds (I NEVER travel "light"...whether we're going to the beach for a week, on a cruise, or even to visit my sister-in-law for the weekend...I take a lot of "stuff"....;-)

Kate, on the other hand, had one small-ish carry on bag and her purse...she did ship two 50 pound boxes to the hotel though, so I don't feel quite so bad...(although as I sit here in our shared room at The Orleans, I do notice that I definitely have more "stuff" occupying space than does Kate... (albeit it VERY organized and tidily so ;-)

Kate is a sweetheart...and we have such parallel lives that it's a bit amazing...again, proof positive that there is no coincidences in life....we are here together to "share" this experience for a reason.

I am thoroughly exhausted, having only three and a half hours sleep last night before traveling here to Mrs. United States....but all is unpacked, dinner has been eaten (Kate went to the fitness center...I used my bands in the room)...and now, I'm gonna be relaxing in my bed and getting some much-needed beauty rest (and sleep)....

Tomorrow is the first "official" day of the Mrs. United States Pageant week...I'm so happy to be here!

It Was a SURPRISE!!!

I thought I was going out to dinner with Julie and Nikki tonight...we were going to the Cheesecake Factory - I was going to have some salmon and NO dessert....Lord knows what the gals were going to eat ;-)

Well, lo and behold, I go to Julie's house to pick her up ("could you come in for a second...I'm still in my flip-flops and gotta change"....this was the response when I called her to say I'd be in her driveway in a second...), and am flabbergasted to see her house filled with my peeps!!! Speechless, giddy, excited and oh so surprised!!!! What a very special crowd of people I have in my life....love each one dearly!!!

I know there were many who couldn't make it over to Julie's house tonight....no worries...I'm sending my "long-distance hugs" to you all and love you to pieces too!!!

Busy, Busy, Busy...

It was a busy Tuesday...just the way I like it ;-)

The day began with my "Walter-ization"...I've come to not only look forward to working out under Walter's tutelage, but I enjoy it too...although today held a few challenges - the most notable being the incident I had with a big, bouncy - and very hard - exercise ball. Can you believe I whacked myself on the side of the face with that thing?!?! I've NEVER claimed to be a sportswoman - especially where bouncing balls are present - but this was not totally my ineptness with bouncing balls that caused my face-whacking debacle...it was the tree's fault ;-)

I'll be sure to post some pics of the crazy exercise - and the negligent tree - that caused this slightly painful, and wholly hilarious episode this morning, just as soon as Walter forwards the pics to me.

After working out, it was run, run, run...with a list of "To-Do's" (gas station, post office, The Vitamin Shop, grocery store, tailors, coaching my girls, emails sent, dress shop, etc, etc) that, by dinner-time and with the assistance of my son and hubby, got "Done-Did-It" ;-)

Four days until I fly to Las Vegas....whoo-hoo!

I called it "symbolic" because I was actually the 3 person to throw the "first pitch" at tonight's Bowie Baysox game...there was a Rear Admiral on the field pitching first, then my amazing DFF (Dear Friend Forever), Nikki Karl (former Mrs. MD and most important to her, the Founder and Executive Director of the National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Connection) threw the second pitch....and then was my turn. I did a fabuloso job (if I do say so myself)...threw that ball right on the money!!! So much fun...I want to do it again!!

Prior to throwing the pitch, we got to meet some folks near the dugouts, including the Baysox's mascot, Louie (not sure what exactly Louie is - some sort of a androgynous lizard?!?!?!...but he/she/it was great at getting the crowd excited for the game...and, as you can see by the photos, is an excellent dancer - or maybe it's Nikki making Louie look good...hehehehehe!

I got to meet some adorable little ones too...Dakota, Sierra, and pals...who wanted to hug (my favorite thing so they didn't have to bend my arm when asking if they could hug me...boy, that sure does make my heart smile!!)....

Another wonderful day....so happy that Nikki asked me to come out with her to lob that ball...and so glad I can share my day with you all....

It's 12 Days and Counting to the Mrs. United States Preliminaries!

The Meermans have been busy, busy, busy the past several days (weeks, months, years....;-) We are really gearing up for Las Vegas now that we are less than 2 weeks away from Mrs. United States....whoo-hoo!!!!!

I may be the one putting on the evening gown, wearing the swimsuit and having the interview with the panel of judges, but believe me, all that I do is a collective effort...teamwork of the BEST kind...MY HUBBY, FAMILY and FRIENDS "kind"! So, as I have that interview and step onto that stage at The Orleans Hotel on July 22nd and 23rd, each one of my "peeps" walks with me...my "army of angels"....

I truly am the luckiest person on the planet....and for this - for all of the people in my life - I am blessed beyond words.

Okay....enough of that...let's talk about WALTER (aka "Mr. Are you Average or Above-Average")....I have been training with Walter Lewis for 6 weeks...3 days a week with him personally, 3 days a week at home (using the schedule that he created for me)....I've "Shifted my Mind, to Transform my Body" (Walter's "cheer")....while I've made a point to say "ouch" a bit or bemoan the giving up of my beloved desserts and butter (amongst other delectable goodies!!), I am so happy ;-)

My physical self feels as healthy and as happy as my mental self, my emotional self and my "soulful self" now....thanks to Walter!

So, if you happen to see many photos of the sessions with Walter posted here, just know that I am so thankful to have met Walter and want to share the experience with you!

What an incredible turn-out at the Annapolis Parade...this time I got to ride in the car (my feet are so thankful!!)....more good times chatting with people along the parade route (throwing lollipops to the kiddos - big ones and small ones too!)....much laughter and smiles!

Before the parade started, I had the opportunity to chat with many folks....love that....I especially enjoyed meeting all the gals (and a few guys too) on this vintage firetruck....one little girl told me she loves princesses so very much (and had to take her flip-flop off to show me all her princesses on it!!)....another thought I was Snow White with blonde hair...nothing gets better than that ;-)

Of course, the "queens" love to take pics with one another....good luck to my Maryland US "little sisters", Nicole and Emily....and to my 2009 MD/DC/DE Perfect Queens as they prepare for America's Perfect in August in Orlando!

The staging area at parades are too fun....everyone is in such a jovial mood! The weather was warm, but thankfully, not too humid...good times!!

I had to hug on my "Maryland United States" sister-queens...Nicole (Miss) and Emily (Teen)...they both are headed off to Las Vegas to compete for their respective national titles on July 17th...I'll miss being there to cheer them on by ONE DAY! Have fun gals!

Like I've said before....I love the little girls...they still believe in the land of fairy tales (where there are princesses and always a happy ending...)....isn't this adorable darling just the cutest ;-)

And the Organ Grinder!!!! How I love those?!?!?! I was lucky enough to have this one directly behind my car in the parade...so of course, once the parade ended, I had to ask if I could have a whirl at cranking that handle....WHOO-HOO!

I started the Parade in the Severna Park Republican Women's Float...but I had to get out and walk....I'm happiest when I get the opportunity to talk to people, meet people...interact with folks...so, me and my 5" lucite heels took to the street and walked a mile and a half...hey, I'm a professional, no problem ;-)

A "Competitor's Diet"....

A couple of days ago, on Facebook, I happened to mention what I was preparing for dinner...some gals and gents chimed in at how "yummy" the grilled chicken breast, brown rice and broccoli sounded, while one gentleman warned all of us to stay away from brown rice because there were too many carbs in that dish (he also mentioned staying away from wheat, rye, etc.). I was compelled to correct this misnomer...this was my response to his comment to avoid carbs whenever possible:

"ACTUALLY, brown rice is a power carb. Carbohydrates are NEEDED as they are the body's primary source for energy and the availability of carbohydrate energy prevents the body from breaking down muscle tissue for fuel...more muscle means more fat burning capability. There are simple carbs and complex carbs...simple carbs are sugar (basically)...complex carbs are an awesome body staple because they control blood sugar spikes and contain needed fiber for digestion and appetite control...so ladies and gents....EAT SOME BROWN RICE!! One more brown rice comment....brown rice is very high in manganese. Manganese provides energy production PLUS antioxidant protection...also a good source of selenium and magnesium...eat up ;-)"

From this discussion on Facebook, some folks asked me to share my daily "diet" after being enlightened to the wonderful world of "clean eating" by my fabulous fitness coach and personal trainer, Walter Lewis...so, for those who care to know what healthy "fuel" I use to stay in tip-top shape, here's an excerpt from my Meal Diary:

Breakfast: Oatmeal w/ tsp honey, 2 egg whites, peppermint tea
Snack: Apple
Lunch: Mixed field greens w/ turkey breast, strawberries and balsamic vinaigrette
Snack: Walnuts & low-fat blueberry yogurt
Dinner: Cod (broiled with olive oil and garlic), baked sweet potato (no butter or salt!!), garden salad
Snack: Blueberries
Beverages during the day: WATER

Breakfast: Oatmeal w/ honey and sliced strawberries, no-salt 1% milk-fat cottage cheese, 12-grain toast (no butter)
Snack: Walnuts and blackberries
Lunch: Wheat wrap w/ Tilapia, red onion, tomato, lettuce, cucumbers and balsamic spray
Snack: Whey Protein Drink w/ flax added (in skim milk)
Dinner: Ground turkey goulash w/ red onion, red pepper, garlic, tomato, brown rice & lentils
Snack: Almonds and blueberries
Beverages during the day: WATER

I think you see the gist of the way I'm eating....it was very difficult for me to give up bread & butter, Skittles, cakes, cookies, peanut butter & jelly, buttered popcorn, pizza, etc., etc....but you know what? My body does feel - and behave - like a well-tuned "machine" now and I know that if I want, I can have one of the above, from time-to-time, but only after I get back from going after the Mrs. United States crown in 3 weeks ;-)

Catching Up a Bit...

Our internet was down for almost 3 days!! Oh my, oh my....

I was aware of my appreciation of all things technical, after all, my Blackberry is awesome, however, I do believe we don't truly realize just how much we depend on - and look forward to - connecting with our peeps using the world wide web ("internet" or whatever you want to call it...). I was beside myself waiting for the Comcast "guy" to get here....hurry up, alright already!!! When I saw that van pull up in my driveway, nary was there ever a lovelier sight....

Okay, I'm over-dramatizing, but it's funny, at least to me ;-)

I'm having such a great time being Mrs. Maryland United States!!! The people I call "friend", the new people I meet, all the "appearances" I'm able to make....add to this special and amazing journey...I'm excited to see where my path continues to take me, excited to have my life touched by the folks whose paths cross mine! Chris is also loving being Mr. Maryland United States...a "job" he takes very seriously ;-)

(I'd like to interject a personal note here....I have to tell you that my husband is THE MOST DEDICATED hubby on the planet...there is NO other man that can come close to his devotion to our marriage, our family...to us!! He makes sure that he is available to be by my side in ALL things. He is a constant in my life...lovingly helping me in any pageant-related endeavor...(being there for all the other ladies who may need a hand as well), supporting me...he's the "official photographer", the "official videographer", the "official everything"...and he always does this and more with a smile on his face and laughter for everyone! Chris is there...we are a team...in ALL THINGS...I'm so lucky to have him as part of my life ;-)

So, what have I been up to those days that I couldn't get on here and write on my blog? Let's see....I was "Walter-ized" on Thursday after attending my Rotary meeting at 7:30 in the morning...made a slew of phone calls, cleaned my house....and played a bit with my granddaughter (THAT is fun because I spoil her and give her back to her mommy...hehehehehe!). Friday, Chris and I went to Frederick so that I could serve as one of the judges for Mrs. Maryland America and hubby went to be the videographer...CONGRATS to Becky Smith, the newly crowned Mrs. Maryland America and a standing ovation to the other delegates...what an awe-inspiring group of women!! It was soooo tough having to "judge" these ladies...they all were amazing!

Saturday, the Meermans spent "chill-axing" with friends....the guys grilling (turkey burgers for us gals with no buns, steaks, ribs, hot dogs and beef burgers for the guys and kids), the kiddos playing in the pool (the guys were actually playing more rambunctiously in that pool than kids!!) The day flew by....isn't life great, especially when we share moments with friends!?!

Sunday is "Church-Day" and more Meerman-time"...and it's mowing the lawn, laundry and preparing for the week ahead ;-)

Took a trip up to Perryville, Maryland today to visit Trish Dowling (and her hubby, Mike) who own The Red Carpet Prom & Pageant Shop. We had a great time trying on gowns and dresses...taking photos with Trish...and then enjoying lunch at Chesapeake Food Works (YUMMY sandwiches, soups and salads!!!)...

If you ever have a chance to visit The Red Carpet location in Perryville (at the Perryville Outlet Center), make sure to call first so that Trish can meet you there too....and when you're finished shopping, go grab a bite to eat at Chesapeake Food Works (also at the Perryville Outlet Center, right down the walkway from The Red Carpet)....

So, it's been nearly a week since my hour long torture-fest (aka, workout) with Walter...yes, I've made sure to do my homework (or in my case, my "away-from-homework"), which includes walking on the treadmill at the hotel's fitness center (HATED that...sooooooooo boring and actually, my feet felt sort of tingling when I was done - very strange sensation that I didn't care for at all), doing squats, lunges, crunches and more lunges and squats (usually in the privacy of the hotel room, however, my hubby and father-in-law were trying to make me do them down Canal Street as well as through the airport...that was NOT happening!!).

Anyway, must say that I actually MISS Walter torturing me! Can you believe it?!?!?! For some insane reason, I have come to enjoy our twice-a-week workout sessions (albeit, I do not like the couple of callouses developing on my palms since using boulders, trees and other natural "equipment" Walter is so fond of). Boy...what a hoot!

I'll be missing out AGAIN tomorrow as I've got other obligations with the MidAtlantic Perfect Pageant Queens (taking them to Perryille to The Red Carpet Pageant and Prom Shop), BUT will be looking forward to Boot Camp with Walter and all my peeps on Wednesday night....

BTW - Hey Walter, there is not a single sore muscle on my body. I don't know, I think you're turning into a softie....tsk, tsk ;-)

My sweet little Beebs stopped by to visit...and cool off...I just love my granddaughter!! She's not only the most adorable 2-year-old on the planet, she is a smart little rascal too...beauty, personality and brains....that's my girl ;-)

Today was a great day for a swim as the sun made it's appearance....apparently it had been raining pretty much all of the 5 days that Chris and I were away from home...so everyone is thankful that we are back for they do believe we brought the heat and sunshine with us from down south ;-)

After visiting Uncle Leo at his fabulous Club Meerman, we were off to visit cousin Ann's Aunt Carol's restored plantation home along the Mississippi River (complete with acres of orange trees!)....Carol is such a southern belle (quite charming and all "proper lady"....pretty as a picture too!!)...I LOVED her house (the renovation done to the house is gorgeous with much of the original "feeling" of the home intact)...one of my favorite parts of the house was the AMAZING antiques inside, especially the bed with half a canopy (GORGEOUS!!!!)....and I loved playing in the elevator too ;-)

After our fabulous visit, we were off to the French Quarter with the Meermans and our new friend, "Aunt Carol" to GW Fins for dinner....

Uncle Leo, our "favorite" Meerman uncle is quite the handyman...as well as an expert grapefruit tree grower ;-) Here Opa and I are standing by one HUGE grapefruit tree...one year Uncle Leo had over 700 grapefruits from one tree!! There were a bevy of little green fruits on this tree and by November, they will be big, juicy ripe grapefruits!

I was also "schooled" on the proper name for what I call "The Mister Ed Door" - you know, those doors that are sort of split in the middle and can open at the top while the bottom portion remains close....Uncle Simon told me it's called a "Dutch Door"....of course it is! Silly Ginny ;-)

Today was another great day in "Nawlins"....the Meerman Trio rose early, had a healthy breakfast (at least I did...Chris and Opa had sausage, eggs, toast, potatoes...for me, egg whites with onion & tomato and oatmeal with blueberries and raspberries..;-) and then we were off to visit St. Louis Cathedral. I love the quiet beauty of the old cathedrals and the Libra in me truly appreciates the amazing art found within the hallowed walls of these sacred treasures....I lit a candle for my brother and mother-in-law while there too.

Then we were off to walk River Walk and on the way, I had to stop and pet the mules waiting for their "fares" to take advantage of a carriage ride down Royal Street and vicinity...of course, I was more concerned with if these adorable and gentle animals were getting enough water, whether they were in danger of over-heating and if they were allowed to "go home" should it become too hot for them...after chatting with the caretakers (and being thoroughly assured that the mules were sprayed down, allowed to drink as much as they wanted and were in fact, taken "home" should the temps rise to 95 degrees and above), I felt much better about the mules "working" out there today (hey, what can I say? I am a softee and hate to see animals unhappy ;-)

We stopped and chatted with local artists and fell in love with some oils on slate by a New Orleans native, Patsy...beautiful works of art! My hubby told me that he was not going to buy me one...but never fear, my father-in-law was near...he bought me one ;-) LOVE IT!!!

Then the guys were off to Cafe Du Monde to get their beignettes and iced coffees....after that, THEY were happy....

Later in the afternoon, we drove to the Baton Rouge area to visit Sherry and Gene Strother!! (CHECK OUT THE PHOTOS OF A HOUSE WE SAW ON OUR DRIVE TO SHERRY AND GENE'S!!!!! AN ARTIST HAS TURNED HIS HOME INTO A WORK OF ART....STRANGE AND AWESOME AT THE SAME TIME!!!)

We had a wonderful visit (LOVE SHERRY!!!)...Sherry showed me all her fabulous memorabilia from her "pageant days" of yore (including the most gorgeous black velvet gown created for her by Tony Bowls "back in the day"...and you know what?!?! I see the SAME design making it's reappearance today....in fact, there is one gal that I know is wearing a gown VERY similar to this gown I saw today of Shers at a major upcoming pageant competition)....the 5 of us then went to Mike Andersons to enjoy a delicious dinner together! We had such a nice time...

After returning to the hotel and taking care of some business, Chris and I strolled out - again - to Bourbon Street, determined to find some jazz for Opa to listen to. We found 2 FABULOUS little jazz clubs (after wading through the muck and yuck) and Opa (as well as Chris and me) had a great time listening to AMAZING musicians! I even got a CD signed by one gentleman - Jamil Sharif (who will also be rooting me on at Mrs. United States and said he would come to Maryland to play for me should I win...whoo-hoo!).

Tomorrow is another day of work for the guys....and then a visit with Uncle Leo and the extended Meerman peeps who live in Louisiana!

When Chris and I flew out on Wednesday with my father-in-law (and their business partner, Mark), it was raining and chilly in Baltimore...I think we were toying with the upper 60's in June!! And then we arrive in New Orleans...can we all say H - O - T?!?!?! Walking out of the airport in New Orleans was quite a shock as we were assaulted with thick, humid 99 degree temperatures...and we LOVED it!!

We picked up our rental car and headed to the hotel down on Canal Street...just a couple of blocks of the French Quarter and Bourbon Street. After unpacking, relaxing a bit and then dining at Dicky Brennan's, the guys and I head out to stroll Bourbon Street in search of my father-in-law's favorite old jazz club...Preservation Hall. It's been about 8 years since I had been in New Orleans (the last time for me was when I attended another one of these Clean Show Conventions with the guys...and my mother-in-law, our Queen Bee was with us on that trip as well...I sure do miss her not being with us, as do Chris and Opa). Boy, have things changed out here in New Orleans! Bourbon Street unfortunately has an extremely "seedy" atmosphere and while I always have a great time with my hubby and my father-in-law anyplace we go, I did not particularly enjoy the locale as we walked Bourbon Street last night looking for Preservation Hall. After several blocks of walking along, we discovered that Preservation Hall was closed, so we turned around to head back to the hotel....

And then I hear a song floating from one of the establishments along Bourbon Street....a familiar tune that I had never heard before until rehearsals at Mrs. United States 2007 when I was there!!!!!!!! And here I was, walking along Bourbon Street thinking how "yuck" the place had gotten when I hear that SAME tune....which instantly brought a smile to my face and I exclaimed, "Chris!!! Do you remember this song?!?!?! It was the song from the Opening Number when I was at Mrs. United States in '07!!!!" He remembered....and we smiled together....it was like I was given a reminder of how happy I am to be going back to Mrs. United States - and no matter where I'm at, life is good!!!

Then, as we walk a bit further along, I hear another song playing that had me saying, "Chris!!!! Do you hear THAT song?!?!" It was "Bad to the Bone"....a George Thorogood tune that my brother LOVED!!! Bobby would strut around singing that song in his comical, yet extremely talented barotone voice and I always giggled! I heard him singing it last night....or rather, remembered him singing it, and I smiled even bigger....so did Chris!

Today, was 8 hours of walking the convention center here in New Orleans...many impressive machines and technology out in the "big wide world of commercial laundry"....amazing really! There's a photo of me sitting in the door of a huge Milnor washer...I asked Chris if I could have one of these in our house and he laughed at me....that's not a nice thing to do to a Queen, now is it....;-)

Dinner (I had salmon and veges) and an award's reception tonight...and now, the "gang" is back at the hotel relaxing....tomorrow is another day...and for the Meerman crew, we'll be driving to Baton Rouge to visit Sherry and Gene Strother! Whoo-hoo!!

Another Fabulous Workout with Walter!!

Through the haze of sweat and the onslaught of misquito attacks (yes, I forgot to spray the Off! out there today!!), I had another fabulous "torture sessions" with Mr. Awesome Physique, Walter Lewis!! Chris and I are off to New Orleans tomorrow, so I won't be tortured by Walter until NEXT Tuesday (whoooooo-hoooooo!!)

Disclaimer: Walter, if you're reading this, the "whooooo-hooooo" was by no means an indication that I am looking forward to not being "tortured" by you, so please do not make me do 600 lunges next week because you think I'm taunting you or some such silly notion as that....and by the way, my rear-end is NOT sore after today's workout....you must be getting soft again....hehehehehe)

Homelessness in the United States

Did you know that homelessness is one of our nation's most serious social problems? Many people associate homelessness ONLY with those poor souls seen sitting on many of our city streets, usually finding "shelter" in an alley, against a building, under an overpass or hovering over a street grate to keep warm in the winter months...they are usually a bit bedraggled-looking, their only possessions stuffed in a small bag (if they have any "possessions" at all).

Homelessness is far more prevalent than the media shares with us...I'd like to share a few facts with you:

1. The average age of a homeless person is 9 YEARS OLD.
2. Nearly 744,000 people are homeless on any given night in the United States.
3. Over the course of this year, between 2.5 and 3.5 MILLION people will experience homelessness in our country.

While homelessness is often the result of interwoven systemic and personal problems, the primary cause of homelessness among families in the United States is the ever growing gap between housing costs and income.

Emergency shelter resources - such as The Light House Shelter in Annapolis - are able to accommodate only a small fraction of the growing number of homeless families in need, which results in many of these people being forced to live in garages, abandoned buildings, and as I experienced as a young homeless mother, living in their car.

What can we, "John & Jane Q. Public" do to help our neighbors in need?

While the "seeds" of homelessness were planted in the 1960s and '70s with the beginning of the decline in affordable housing (amongst other things), several factors have affected its growth over the last two decades, including the fact that earnings from employment and from benefits have not kept pace with the cost of housing for low income and poor people. Services that every family needs for support and stability have become either harder for the very poor to afford and find or non-existent. The NAEH believes that WE CAN END HOMELESSNESS IN THE UNITED STATES IN TEN YEARS!

We must -

1) plan for outcomes (most communities are STILL planning on how to MANAGE homelessness instead of ENDING it - this must change).
2) close the "front" door (rather than continuing to fund systems and programs that are short-term quick fixes for people in need, we must support incentive programs that favor helping people become self-sustained)
3) open the "back" door (people should be helped to exit homelessness as quickly as possible through a "housing first" approach, for which there is legislation being introduced before Congress by various homelessness organizations that we, as a society, can encourage our lawmakers to adopt)
4) build the infrastructure (we must change the system that encourages continued growth in unaffordable housing as well as change the homeless assistance system to include larger efforts to help the very poor).

We do not have to be a politician, lobbyist or even one who works directly with a homelessness coalition organization to make a difference...we can encourage and support those persons to take action and, ultimately, WE WILL ALL HAVE HELPED in rebuilding the lives of our neighbors who are struggling.

Thanks for reading this...this "issue" is extremely close to my heart and I just pray that by my being open and willing to share with others my experiences as a homeless mother in the wealthiest country in the world, that I may be able to offer a glimmer of hope to one who is living through the same at this very moment...as well as do my part to help end homelessness in the United States.

Mr. & Mrs. Maryland's Excellent Adventure to Atlanta with Joey & Terri from The Competitive Image ;-)

I had sooooooo much fun….wait, scratch that….I had a FANTABUOUS Sunday today with my hubby and Joey and Terri (my “peeps” from Competitive Image!!!) in “Hotlanta”!!! Chris and I got up at 4 in the morning (after hitting the pillows at 2 am!!) to catch our 6:40 am flight…Joey and Terri drove from Dothan, Alabama (they got up at 4 am too!!) to pick us up from the airport…so that we could all race over to “Market” and to SHERRI HILL!!! Whoooooo-hooooo!!!
Okay….so land at about 9 am and Chris and I make our way to the terminal where Joey and Terri are waiting patiently (our plane was late….). We spot them, they spot us…some hugging here and there and then we’re down to business…the “business” of visiting Sherri Hill…whooooo-hoooo! I was like a kid in an endless candy shop ;-)
The four of us put our heads together with Sherri and have come up with the most amazing gown ever….I am in awe of the creative talent of Sherri Hill – and wow! You should see her sketch!!! A M A Z I N G…meeting, and working with Sherri Hill, is the equivalent for me like my sons (Justin and Chris) getting to meet Aaron Lewis from the band Staind” (did I spell that right?!?!?!)…can you tell I am tickled to pieces!?!
Sherri is so gracious…kind, personable, quietly dignified, beautiful and I just love her to pieces!!!
I also got to meet Kathleen Benton…she’s vying for the Miss South Carolina USA title this November…she was Sherri’s model for the day. Kathleen drove to Atlanta from Myrtle Beach for the weekend to show all of Sherri’s GORGEOUS gowns and dresses to various buyers…What a beautiful girl Kathleen is…inside and out! I hope she wins the title in November…I’ll be praying she does ;-)
Joey, Terri, Chris and I spent several hours “playing” at Sherri’s and (after some pics and hugging…hehehehe), we were off to hunt for accessories and other “stuff”…whoo-hoo! (Chris, at this point, decided to wait in a comfy chair for us…he had enough for the day!) If you’ve never had the wonderful opportunity to go to Market in Atlanta, I’ll try to describe the building…hundreds of escalators – and mean HUNDREDS – are leading eager shoppers to and fro (up and down) in the ENORMOUS structure that, at first seems like an endless catacomb of jewelry, shoes, gowns, handbags, outerwear, hats, and even “blinged-out” mirrors, license plates, (and pretty much any other object that one can think to glue crystals to!!)…there are maybe 20 floors in this gigantic building that seriously encompasses several city blocks! It’s like a beehive alive with fashion ;-)

After exhausting ourselves shopping, the Four Musketeers made our way back to the car (got off on the wrong floor at first, but Joey quickly figured out where we were at…hehehehe), loaded our treasures into the trunk and headed to the Cheesecake Factory…that’s right, the Cheesecake Factory…the place where my most favorite dessert lives…the CF Strawberry Shortcake! I was good! I ate a salmon salad…no dessert…however, TERRI HAD THE SHORTCAKE and Joey had a Lemoncello Cake!! Not fair! Torture...but I'm determined so I can handle it ;-)

It was a great day…thank you Joey and Terri for spending your Sunday with me and Chris and for lending your expertise on helping to design the most fabulous, gorgeous, spectacularly WOW gown…I am so excited to wear it…and also my “other dress” you and Sherri designed for me!! MMMWWWAAAHHHH!!!

I’m actually sitting on the plane at the moment, writing this on my laptop (to be added to my blog after I get home tonight)…flying home – always great to go home ;-)

I just had a heartwarming conversation with Shemicka (who I found out works in Annapolis…still has her home in Atlanta and commutes back and forth…). Beautiful soul she is…and hey, Shemicka, I’m sending up that prayer for you and “you-know-who”…let me know what November brings ;-)

A beautiful day for a festival celebrating South Anne Arundel County!! Chris and I made our appearance....first at my Rotary Club's booth, then over to the WNAV radio booth for a live interview with Dan and Tim (go 1430 AM!!!) and THEN I had the awesome pleasure of being dunked in the DUNK TANK!!! Let me just say this, my friends....I MUST be NUTS!! First of all...that water was COLD!!! Second...these South County people are ROUGH on us "beauty queens"!!! As soon these folks realized that "Mrs. Maryland" was perched (precariously, I might add!!) on that tiny little white seat inside that tank, they were determined to get me soaked in that tank...it was NOT a pretty sight....and I have injuries to prove it...yes, I'm whining, but I'm allowed...my husband said I can ;-)

Working Out with Walter Lewis....OUCH, but Awesome!

Another wonderfully excruciating Awesome Physique Experience....YOU too can go from "average" to "awesome" with the help of Walter Lewis....The Official Personal Trainer to Mrs. Maryland United States 2009 ;-)

Today's session with Walter was soooooo hard....remind me to NEVER taunt him again about a part of my body not hurting!!! (Which I did when I said my abs didn't hurt...not smart, Ginny!!!) What was I thinking?!?!?!?! He made sure that quip I made about my abs not hurting the last time we worked out was not going to be repeated....hehehehhehe! Just check out my expressions of sheer pain in some of the photos....comical, yes?!?! I'm happy to be of amusement to you all....however, my abs are NOT laughing tonight. Did I say "OUCH!!!!"?

While Walter sure did challenge me to give it my all today, I have to admit, there were a couple of times that I thought I couldn't go on....he was not having that! Walter makes certain that you do not give up on yourself - to dig deep and prove your mettle. And afterward, through the haze of pain...hehehehe....you feel AWESOME! (At least I do....)

IMPORTANT NOTE: The stick you see Walter wielding in some photos was in no way used to beat me....although I do think that getting whacked by that stick just may have hurt a whole lot less than the "torture" of squatting, lunging, leg lifts this-and-that, lateral oblique this-and-that and whatever else Mr. Awesome Physique conjured up for me to do today...hehehehe ;-)
